Styling A Console Table
Consoles and other occasional tables can often be difficult to style, what do you put on a table that really doesn’t have too much of a purpose, other than to add interest to an entry or to serve as a backdrop to a sofa.
When styling a console or occasional table, you need to style in layers and use varying levels with the items you select to add real interest. Here are some essentials we often use.
Lighting really does complete a console table whether you choose to have a symmetrical look and use two lamps, or place one lamp to one end of the table. Lighting is a great place to start and really sets the foundation for how you style your table. (Photo: Nathan Kirkman for Alto, designed by Samantha Todhunter)
A stack of books is a must, they allow you to build varying heights by placing other items on top of them, so get searching for some brilliant hardcovers. (Photo: Patrick Cline)
Trays are a brilliant base to start layering with, they look fabulous as the base to place your candles and sculptural objects on. Try a gorgeous marble or brass tray it is absolutely the perfect table addition.
Either one large centred piece above your table or a collection of great pieces layered together is a great way to frame your table, and sometimes a brilliant alternative to a mirror. (Photo: Fashionismo)
Mirrors hung centrally behind a console table or propped up against the wall behind your table will make your space look larger, add light to the area and serve as a beautiful backdrop. (Photo: Timothy Whealon)
VASES & PLANTERS
Vases filled with fresh blooms, or planters with indoor plants are a brilliant addition to bring a little life to your table. Orchids, maidenhair ferns and the never fail fiddle leaf fig are some of our top choices for bringing a green touch to your space! We love them in our bloomingville brass planter and the H Skjalm P Valencia Vase. (Photo: The Stables)
The base or lower level of a console is the ideal place for baskets and decorative boxes not only do they look fantastic, but being able to add storage is a real plus! Our House Doctor handmade art boxes are ideal for this.
SCULPTURAL PIECES AND OBJECTS
These items are really what add interest to your table, sculptural pieces draw the eye. Have some fun with these items, they can be as unusual as you like, and a collection of old finds are often a fabulous option. Our brass star sculptures are a perfect choice!
